Play Therapy Process in a school:
*The school must be able to provide a room for play therapy that will be consistently private and available each week free of disruptions
I will meet with the school to discuss potential referrals, assess suitability for play therapy and plan suitable days and times for intervention(s) to take place
The school will contact parents/carers of the children referred and introductory/assessment meeting with parents will be arranged with the therapist
In some cases the therapists may need to have more than one assessment meeting with the parent
During the introductory meeting with the parent/carers, the therapist will gather relevant information, determine the child’s perceived needs and administrate signed consent forms.
Consent from parent/carer (person who is legally responsible for the child) is essential, without it play therapy cannot take place.
The therapist will meet the child and parent for the initial play therapy session
Sessions last 45minutes and should happen in the same place and at the same time each week
The play therapist will provide a wide range of carefully selected play and art materials to support/facilitate the child’s expression in a developmentally appropriate way
Every six to eight weeks the therapist will arrange a review meeting with parents/carers and, where appropriate, relevant staff from school
The duration of the intervention is dependent on the child’s level of need. The child’s therapeutic process will be carefully monitored by the therapist in consideration with review meetings with parents/carers and school staff. The minimum number of sessions per child would be 12 sessions. By week 8 the therapist will assess whether to plan an ending (4 week ending process) or to continue with therapy
